Kids, Cars, and College | Back-to-School Vehicle Maintenance Tips

September 23, 2016

It may feel like the time you brought your child to their first day of kindergarten, only this time you’re handing them the keys to your family’s second-hand vehicle to head off to their first day of College.  With tuition costs keeping your household on a tight budget, it’s even more important to stay on top of regular vehicle maintenance to ensure your vehicle is safe, reliable, and doesn’t become a source of extra expenses with high repair costs.  To avoid facing major vehicle issues, follow  these preventative maintenance tips:

Check all fluid levels

  • Engine oil
  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Coolant

Fluids is vital to the moving parts of the engine, brakes, or transmission.  Failing to ensure your vehicle has the appropriate levels of fluids can cause your vehicle to overheat,  engine failure, and sometimes engine damage.  If you’re unsure how to check or replace these fluids, contact your local Xtreme Tire Garage for assistance.

Tire rotations

Since the weight on the front and rear tires differ, rotating your tires annually can increase the life of the tires by providing even distribution of wear on them.

Wiper Blades

When’s the last time you changed your wiper blades?  If you can’t remember, it’s best you replace them with brand new ones.  You wouldn’t want to find out they’re worn out during a rainfall, as it could be quite dangerous driving without complete visibility.

Dashboard Warning Lights

dashboard warning lights

Before taking off for college, check that your dashboard is free of any warning lights.

  • Battery/Charging Alert
  • Coolant Temp Warning
  • Transmission Temperature
  • Oil Pressure Warning
  • Oil Change Reminder

Do not ignore the warnings.  Even though your vehicle may continue to run even with a warning light appearing, you may actually be causing extensive damage which could result in high repair costs or even worse, major engine damage.

As soon as you notice a warning light, you should bring your vehicle to a local Xtreme Tire Garage to have it inspected.  We will make our best recommendation to address your vehicle’s needs to ensure your warning light turns off and your vehicle is safe to drive without any risk of damage.

Safety kit

Keep your trunk clear of clutter, so you can store a vehicle safety kit you will need incase you get stuck on the road with minor vehicle troubles.  Here’s a suggestion of some necessities every driver should have to prepare for an emergency situation:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight
  • Blanket
  • Seatbelt cutter
  • Windshield washer fluid/Antifreeze
  • Snowbrush/Scraper
  • Portable Shovel
  • Tow rope
