It’s Time For Spring Car Maintenance!
March 18, 2017
Finally, it’s time to give your prized possession some well-needed TLC with spring car maintenance. From potholes to freezing cold temperatures, your vehicle has endured a lot to get you to and fro this winter. Just like we need a spa day once in awhile, your car could sure use the same at your local auto mechanic shop!
With Spring upon us and Summer road trips to plan, we need to think of safety first. As eager as you may be to hit the road and head into the warm weather, a few Spring car maintenance checks are needed to ensure your vehicle is operating at its best and as safely as it should. The more you use your vehicle or the longer distance that you drive, it becomes all the more important to prioritize maintenance and repairs. And for good reason, such as avoiding large repairs in the future, increasing your family’s safety, enhancing environmental performance of your vehicles, and protecting resale value.
Here’s a few things you can do to prepare your car for Spring:
Replace the windshield wiper blades
It’s not uncommon for the rubber on the blades to become damaged and torn after swishing away ice and heavy snow during the winter. Replacing them with new ones will ensure that they work during unrelenting Spring rain showers.
Change oil and oil filter
Your car’s owner’s manual will indicate to you how often you need to change your car’s oil. Typically it’s every 5,000 kilometers or once after every season. Neglecting to change your oil can result in poor performance and engine damage.
Check fluid levels
Aside from engine oil, there are other vital fluids that require attention such as, engine oil; power steering, brake and transmission fluids; and windshield washer solvent. Again your owner’s manual will indicate to you how often these fluids need to be inspected and replaced. These fluids are normally inexpensive to replace and your mechanic can get this all done for you quickly and easily.
Check your car battery
It’s very common that a car battery 5 years or older will not make it through a winter without needing to be replaced. Extreme cold weather is not friendly to older batteries and causes them to work twice as hard. At this point, it would be safer to replace your old battery with a brand new one during your spring car maintenance appointment.
Check your lighting – Check all exterior and interior lighting to identify any problems.
