The excuses are endless: “I’ve never used winter tires before, why start now? All-seasons tires are just as good. Winter tires cost more than they’re worth. I drive a 4×4 so don’t need them. I’m from Alberta.”
While it’s true Alberta, despite its long harsh winters, has one of the weaker rates of winter-tire use in Canada — a fact that leads the province to record the No. 1 highest rate of increase in auto insurance claims over the winter, according to Aviva Canada — it’s also true that about 30 per cent of drivers across Canada still see winter tires as optional, as though it’s perfectly reasonable to gamble with personal health, liability, and the likelihood of crashing one’s car.
