Why Does My Tire Keep Losing Air? Common Causes of a Slow Tire Leak

If your tire keeps losing air, topping it up every few days may seem like a temporary solution, but recurring pressure loss usually deserves a closer look. A tire can lose air for several reasons, from a small puncture to a leaking valve stem, damaged wheel, or change in temperature.

Why Does My Tire Keep Losing Air?
Some air loss is normal. Transport Canada notes that tires can naturally lose approximately 14 kPa, or 2 psi, per month as air gradually passes through the tire material. Tire pressure can also decrease by about 7 kPa, or 1 psi, for every 5°C drop in temperature.
However, if one tire is losing pressure noticeably faster than the others, or you repeatedly need to add air, another issue may be responsible.
Here are several common causes.
A Small Puncture Can Cause a Slow Tire Leak
A nail, screw, or other sharp object can create a puncture small enough that the tire does not immediately go flat. Instead, air may escape gradually over several days or weeks.
This can make the problem easy to overlook. You may add air, drive normally, and only realize something is wrong when the tire pressure warning returns.
Not every puncture requires tire replacement. Whether a damaged tire can be repaired depends on factors such as the location and extent of the damage. A professional inspection can determine whether tire leak repair is appropriate or whether replacement is the safer option.
A Valve Stem May Be Leaking
The valve stem is the small component you use when adding air to the tire. Although easy to overlook, it can also be a source of a tire air leak.
The valve or its internal components can deteriorate or become damaged over time. Debris around the valve can also interfere with its seal.
If there is no obvious puncture but the tire pressure keeps dropping, checking the valve is one part of a thorough inspection.
The Tire Bead May Not Be Sealing Properly
The tire bead is the area where the tire meets the wheel. This connection needs to form an airtight seal.
Corrosion, debris, damage, or an issue with how the tire is seated can allow air to escape between the tire and wheel. These leaks are not always visible from the outside, which is why simply examining the tread may not reveal the problem.
A technician can inspect the bead area and wheel to determine where the pressure loss is coming from.
A Bent or Damaged Rim Can Let Air Escape
Potholes and curb impacts can affect more than your alignment. A strong impact can also damage a wheel.
If the rim becomes bent or damaged where it meets the tire, the bead may no longer seal correctly. The result can be recurring air loss even when the tire itself does not have a typical tread puncture.
This is one reason repeated pressure loss should be diagnosed rather than automatically treated as a puncture.
Temperature Changes Can Lower Tire Pressure
A drop in tire pressure does not always mean something is damaged.
As temperatures fall, the air inside a tire contracts and the pressure decreases. Transport Canada recommends measuring tire pressure when the tires are cold and notes that colder weather can noticeably affect inflation pressure.
This becomes particularly relevant in Ontario during seasonal temperature swings.
If all four tires lose a similar amount of pressure after a significant drop in temperature, weather may be contributing. If only one tire repeatedly loses significantly more air than the others, it is worth having that tire checked.
Tire Damage or Age Can Also Lead to Pressure Loss
Cuts, cracking, bulges, and other physical damage can affect a tire’s ability to retain air.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends inspecting tires regularly for cuts, punctures, cracks, bulges and other signs of damage, while checking tire pressure at least once a month when the tires are cold.
Visible damage should not be ignored simply because the tire still holds some pressure. A tire can continue to lose air gradually while another issue develops.
What If the TPMS Light Keeps Coming Back?
Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System can provide an important warning, but it should not be used as your only method of checking inflation.
A TPMS warning means at least one tire is significantly underinflated. NHTSA also notes that low tire pressure can be difficult to identify just by looking at a tire, so a pressure gauge is still important.
If you refill a tire and the warning repeatedly returns, the next step should be determining why the pressure is dropping.
Don’t Keep Treating the Symptom
Adding air can restore the correct pressure temporarily, but it does not fix a puncture, leaking valve, bead issue, damaged rim, or deteriorating tire.
