fall car maintenance

There are a variety of things you can do to make sure you and your vehicle are ready for the colder weather. Here is a practical, fall car maintenance checklist to reassure your vehicle is ready for the upcoming season change.

1. Brakes and tires – Many parts of your car act differently in colder weather. This is especially dangerous when it comes to your brakes and tires. Make sure your tire’s treads aren’t worn down and that they are properly inflated. Furthermore, ensure your brakes aren’t squealing or reacting slowly.

2. Check all lights – Make sure all of your lights are working and no bulbs need to be replaced. This time of the year means less daylight, which means your lights are utilized a lot more. You need to be seen to be safe.

3. Top up all fluids – Double check that all your car’s fluids are topped up. Oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant and window washer fluid need to be at the right levels for optimal performance. Also, it’s a good idea to keep some of those fluids in your trunk in case you need to top them up.

4. Wiper blades – Fall means rain and possibly snow in the forecast. Make sure that your wipers are not broken or damaged. Also, check that your wiper arms are in good working order.

5. Heater/ defroster working – Early morning frost becomes a possible reality in fall. Having a fully-functioning heating system is integral to making sure you can see. Make sure that all vents are working as well, to make sure you stay warm in these colder months.

6. Battery – Having a working and charged battery is integral. The cold affects batteries and how they perform. If you think you need a new one, this is a great time to change it. Keeping booster cables in your trunk is another useful tool to have and will be a lifesaver in an emergency situation.

7. Change oil and filter – If your oil change date is close, it never hurts to get it done early. Oil is the lifeblood of your car and it needs to be kept clean. Generally, 5w-30 oil is used in colder weather, compared to the 10w-30, which is typically used in the summer.

8. Cooling system – Make sure that your coolant levels are where they need to be. It’s best to check the level when your car is cold.

9. If check engine light is on, find out why – If your check engine light is on, make sure to get it looked at by a reliable mechanic. This could stop a small issue from becoming a larger one.

10. Get a carwash or detail – A clean car helps you to spot body issues on your car. To keep it organized take out any non-essential items out of your car.
