Preparing Your Vehicle for Summer Road Trip Safety in Ontario

May 26, 2026

From cottage weekends and camping getaways to long drives across the province, Ontario summers are made for road trips. Before you load the trunk, hook up the trailer, or get the RV ready for a few days away, it is worth making sure your vehicle is ready for the extra kilometres.

Summer road trip safety starts before you leave the driveway. Tires, brakes, fluids, battery health, and visibility can all affect how your vehicle handles heat, traffic, highway speeds, and added weight.

Check Your Tires Before the Trip

Tires are one of the most important parts of any summer road trip inspection. They affect traction, braking, fuel use, handling, and ride comfort.

Before a long drive, check your tire pressure when the tires are cold. Transport Canada notes that tire pressure supports 95 per cent of a vehicle’s weight, and a tire can look properly inflated while still being underinflated by as much as 20 per cent.

You should also look for uneven tread wear, cracks, bulges, punctures, and low tread depth. If your vehicle has a spare tire, check that too. A spare that is flat, damaged, or missing equipment can leave you stuck when you need it most.

Make Sure Your Brakes Are Ready

Long drives often mean heavier loads, higher speeds, sudden slowdowns, and stop-and-go traffic. Your brakes need to be ready for all of it.

Watch for squealing, grinding, vibration, pulling, or a brake pedal that feels soft. These can point to worn pads, rotor issues, low brake fluid, or other concerns. If something feels different, have it checked before the trip instead of waiting until you are already on the highway.

Look at Fluids, Battery, and Cooling

Summer heat can make small maintenance issues more noticeable. Before leaving, check your engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid.

Coolant is especially important during summer road trips because hot weather, traffic, and extra cargo can put more strain on the engine. Battery health also matters. Heat can be hard on batteries, especially if they are older or already weak.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation recommends regular checks of oil, coolant, belts, hoses, lights, tire pressure, and brakes as part of proper vehicle maintenance.

Do Not Forget Alignment and Suspension

If your steering wheel is off-centre, the vehicle pulls to one side, or the ride feels rough, your alignment or suspension may need attention.

These issues can make long drives less comfortable and can cause tires to wear unevenly. A pre-trip inspection can help catch worn suspension components, alignment concerns, and steering issues before they affect your drive.

RVs Need a Pre-Trip Check Too

If your summer plans include an RV, a pre-trip service is a smart step. RVs often sit parked for long periods, then return to the road carrying significant weight. Tires, brakes, batteries, fluids, belts, and lights should all be checked before a long drive.

Xtreme Tire Garage offers RV & trailer repair service, making it easier for Ontario drivers to prepare larger vehicles before summer travel. It is a practical way to catch maintenance concerns before they interrupt a vacation.

Visibility Matters More Than Drivers Think

Clear visibility can make a major difference during summer driving. Rain, road spray, bugs, dust, and low evening sun can all make it harder to see.

Check your wiper blades, washer fluid, headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and mirrors. Cleaning the inside of your windshield can also help reduce glare during early morning or evening drives.

Pack for Roadside Delays

Even a well-maintained vehicle can run into delays. Keep a simple roadside kit in your vehicle with jumper cables, a flashlight, phone charger, first aid supplies, water, reflective triangles, and a tire pressure gauge.

For longer drives, plan fuel stops, rest breaks, and charging stops if you drive an EV. A well-planned route can reduce stress, especially during long weekends or heavy cottage traffic.

Get Road-Ready Before You Leave

A summer road trip should be remembered for the destination, not an avoidable breakdown. A pre-trip inspection gives you a clearer picture of your tires, brakes, fluids, battery, alignment, suspension, and overall vehicle condition.
